The Power of SEO in Sports: How to Outrank Your Competitors on the SERP

LinkedIn

There are close to nine billion Google searches online every single day. While it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many sports-related searches there are per day, there are billions of sports-related searches per year. The term “aaron judge,” the New York Yankees slugger who set the American League single-season home run record last season, gets 1.5 million searches per month alone (and a lot more than that during the MLB season). That is for just a single player.

So many searches, yet so little space on any search engine results page (SERP). Google, Bing, and other search engines have become very good at surfacing the information people seek when searching the internet. That means it’s essential to know what the people are searching for, and understand what sort of content the search engines will display on SERP #1.

These days, there is often a Quick Answer at the top of the results that answers a searcher’s question without even clicking through to the website. Quick Answers are highly-visible text snippet answers and links at the top of the Google SERPs. And let’s be honest, if you’re not on page 1, the chances of someone clicking through to your site on pages 2, 3, 4, or 5 are pretty slim. So much competition (especially in the ultra-competitive sports and sports-betting markets) and so little space. It takes time, research, quality content, optimization, and much more to rank and show up in the SERPs.

So, what is a digital marketer to do?

The answer is focusing on intent, long-tail keywords, and finding your niche in your market. That can be time-consuming and, if not done right, may result in less-than-ideal organic traffic numbers.  However, at Data Skrive, we create customized sports and sports betting content at scale. That means we’re not making a handful of articles that drive just a few visits. We are creating thousands of articles, all unique, all optimized to rank on the SERPs, and all focused on any game, team, player, league, or stat that you want. We have a knack for finding those topics and keywords that will drive meaningful traffic to your site, whether big or small.

If you are producing the same content for your competitors, why would you want us to produce it? The simple answer is that it’s not the same content. Each article is unique and tailored to the specific website. A more in-depth explanation is here.

We accomplish full coverage of the SERP in three primary ways:

  1. Be seen when it matters by sports fans with relevant, compelling, and educational sports content on high value topics such as How to Watch, Betting Previews, Player & Props, Team Stats, Fantasy Sports, and much more;
  2. Blanket the SERP with optimized content designed to appear in key places on the SERP like Quick Answers, the Google Top Stories, the Google images and video results (if that’s your goal), and even the personalized Google Discover feed; and
  3. Cover large and small events with full coverage of the keyword demand curve focusing on valuable long-tail keywords. We have a proven track record of taking up top-notch, above-the-fold real estate on Google SERP #1 for small, obscure games, events, and players, as well as big-time national games, events, and well-known superstars.

We do all this at scale across leagues, players, and teams.

Let’s take a look at Data Skrive content in the wild

Here’s an example of the commonly searched NHL keywords, “how to watch stars vs. kraken game.” Data Skrive-generated articles occupy the Quick Answer, two of the three Google Top Stories, and the second classic organic result, just below NHL.com itself.

More interested in driving golf traffic? Here’s an example of a SERP for the keyword “puntacana championship live stream,” with five Data Skrive-generated articles on Google SERP #1. Total SERP domination!

Want to up your college basketball and March Madness game? Here’s an example of Data Skrive-generated articles occupying the Quick Answer and two of the three Google Top Stories:

Perhaps enhancing your NBA coverage is more up your alley. The image below is a SERP screenshot of a search for “celtics knicks injuries today,” with Data Skrive-generated articles again taking up two of the three Google Top Stories.

Needless to say, getting that top-of-the-SERP placement typically results in maximum traffic for any given query. You’ve probably noticed that Google Top Stories often occupy the top three spots on a SERP. According to a recent study by Backlinko, the top position on a SERP gets 27.6% of all clicks, with positions two and three getting 15.8% and 11.0%, respectively. That means SERPs with Top Stories at the top get more than 54% of the clicks.

At Data Skrive, we create hundreds of different types of articles, each unique and optimized to rank and drive traffic. We cover dozens of leagues and thousands of players. Our content library has already increased 150% from 2022 to the beginning of 2023, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. We continue to add content to cover new leagues and content topics every day.
